Boston, MA – The United States Senate voted on a bipartisan basis to confirm Dr. Miguel Cardona as the next Secretary of the Education. Latinos for Education, the nation’s first Latino-founded and led organization dedicated to training and placing Latinos into leadership roles within the education sector, issued the following statement on Dr. Cardona’s confirmation:
“We celebrate the confirmation of Dr. Miguel Cardona, a proven and passionate Latino educator and leader, as the next Secretary of Education. Representation matters, especially in education; by having a Latino leader who understands the experience of students who come from working and immigrant families, and are multilingual learners, we are confident that their needs and voice will be visible in the policies and direction that the Department of Education makes on behalf of our nation’s 76 million students.
We are excited to work with Dr. Cardona as he tackles the biggest challenges facing our students right now, recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and getting students back to learning. Latino and Black families continue to disproportionately bear the health and economic toll of COVID-19. Our children experience the biggest disparities in our education system, thus it is imperative that equity guides all the decisions and guidance Dr. Cardona makes about recovery efforts. Our network of over three thousand Latino educators and leaders nationwide is doing tremendous work to meet the academic needs of Latino students during this pandemic, and we are ready and eager to help bring that on-the-ground experience and innovation as well as our National Principles for a Latino education agenda to Dr. Cardona as he rebuilds a new education system that finally delivers on the promise of equal education opportunity for all students.”
