New cohort of Latino educators represent schools within Massachusetts, Texas and The Bay Area and collectively serve close to 1,000 Latino students
Boston, MA – Latinos for Education announced the 18 Latino educators that are participating in its 2023 Latinx Teachers Fellowship, an innovative national program that provides a cohort of K-12 educators in Massachusetts, Greater Houston, and the Bay Area with a learning network of peers and the tools needed to serve and improve academic outcomes for English Language Learners (ELL). This year’s cohort collectively serves close to 1,000 students at the elementary, middle school and high school level.
“The Latinx Teacher Fellowship launched during the pandemic as a platform to connect Latino teachers as they navigate unprecedented times and develop innovative ways to help Latino students, especially English language learners, advance academically,” said Dr. Karen Maldonado, Chief Program and Innovation Officer at Latinos for Education. “The program has grown and supported a total of 127 Latino educators to date, and we are excited to have 18 new teachers join our growing community that spans from the East Coast to the West Coast.”
Education can be a lonely career path for Latino educators, considering that Latinos only make up 9% of all teachers nationwide. This program is one way Latinos for Education is creating opportunities for Latinos to stay within the education profession and advance in their careers. The program helps Latino teachers identify ways to leverage their cultural identity to create meaningful change for students, clarify their goals and ambitions within the education landscape, and create best practices for how to support students that are traditionally underserved in the K-12 education system.
This year’s Latinx Teachers Fellows, and the school districts they serve, include:
Massachusetts
Greater Houston Region
California Bay Area
